East Fork State Park - Bethel, OH (near Cincinnati)

TOAD AND TADPOLE THANKS

A big thanks to all the racers who made it out to the Toad and Tadpole Adventure Races this weekend! We hope you all enjoyed East Fork State Park. I think we were almost as happy as all of you when the sun finaly started coming out in the afternoon!

A big thanks as well to all the volunteers. Their assistance is invaluable to the event and we appreciate them taking the time out of their schedules to help us out. The following people were our volunteers throughout the day:

• Ray Scheidler (Toad Safety Boat and Post-Race Grill Master)
• Laura Ruwe (Toad Boat Take-Out Transition)
• Betty Kost (Toad Boat Take-Out Transition)
• Alynn Chezem (Tadpole Bike Drop)
• Matt Dahl (Tadpole Bike Drop)

Also, thanks to all of the spectators and significant others who helped us move gear around toward the end of the day when we moved into the pavilion! And last, but not least, a big thanks to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for allowing us to use East Fork State Park for an event like this. It's easy to see that East Fork is a great venue for adventure racing. But hosting a race wouldn't be possible without the cooperation of the park managers.

TOAD SUMMARY

The 8-hour Toad Adventure Race began at 10am with temperatures in the low 40's. The pre-race meeting was brisk as racers learned the details of their upcoming optional swim on the trekking leg of the race. Racers began on the paddling leg and were required to obtain at least 2 of the 4 paddling checkpoints. In addition to the four checkpoints on the paddling course, there was also a take-out location that marked the start/finish of the trekking leg of the race. Once on the trekking course, teams were required to obtain at least 5 of the 8 trekking checkpoints before getting back into their boats. Water led to a couple of wrinkles on the trekking course: one planned (the 150m swim) and one unplanned (the raging river crossing by checkpoint 3). Teams used differing strategies in regards to the swim. Some teams chose to swim first, some teams chose to swim last, and some teams figured out a way to not swim at all. Thankfully, around the time that most teams were finishing the trekking leg, the sun came out and temperatures warmed up significantly!

After the trekking leg, teams were back into their boats to either (1) finish collecting paddling checkpoints or (2) paddle directly back to the start/finish line to start the biking leg. Once on the biking leg, teams were required to collect at least 4 of the 7 biking checkpoints spread out among the single-track mountain biking trails and the local roads. After biking, teams rushed back to the finish line to try to make the 6:00pm with as many checkpoints as possible.

Jake1 was the only team to clear the entire course, obtaining all possible checkpoints and finishing at 5:39pm. Next was CincyExpress, obtaining all but one of the checkpoints. And, third place was Son Better Keep Up, obtaining all but one of the checkpoints, but suffering a one checkpoint penalty for finishing 2 minutes late. Congratulations to all teams who braved the Toad Adventure Race course!

TADPOLE SUMMARY

We were excited to see all of the first-time racers that made it out for the 4-hour Tadpole Adventure Race! The Tadpole began at 1:45pm just as the sun was peeking through the clouds and temperatures rose into the upper 50's/low 60's. Racers begaon on the paddling leg and were required to obtain at least 2 of the 4 paddling checkpoints. After the paddle, teams returned to the start/finish area to get on their bikes, where they were required to obtain both of the biking checkpoints on the single-track mountain bike trails. After obtaining the biking checkpoints, teams biked to the start of the trekking leg of the race. On the trekking section, racers were required to obtain at least 4 of the 10 trekking checkpoints. Teams had to manage their time as there was still a short bike ride remaining from the end of the trekking section to the finish line. The cutoff time for the finish was 5:45pm.

Double A was the only team to clear the entire Tadpole course, obtaining all possible checkpoints and finishing with 10 minutes to spare at 5:35pm. Next was Backseat Drivers who obtained all but one of the checkpoints. And, third place was The Incredibles, obtaining all but one of the checkpoints and finishing with just a couple of minutes to spare. The Incredibles also featured the youngest racer on the course as 10-year old Ben Elfner helped his team to the 3rd place finish! Congratulations to all teams who took on the Tadpole Adventure Race!
